How to clean lyrics for Suno & Udio

Suno and Udio treat chord letters and messy annotations as lyrics. Paste a chord sheet straight from a tab site and the model will try to sing "Am F C G" as words. LyricPrep removes standalone chord lines, strips inline chords, standardizes section tags to [Verse] [Chorus] format, cleans repeat markers, and normalizes spacing β€” all in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and your originals are never modified: the tool only transforms a copy.

Cleaning takes seconds but changes the result dramatically. Structured, chord-free lyrics give the model clear sections to follow, which means better verse/chorus contrast, fewer mumbled artifacts, and no wasted credits on generations ruined by a stray "x2" being sung out loud.

What makes lyrics "AI-ready"?

Four things separate lyrics that generate well from lyrics that don't:

A typical songwriter workflow

  1. Draft anywhere. Write in your notes app, Google Doc, or paste from a chord site β€” formatting doesn't matter yet.
  2. Paste into LyricPrep. Drop a .txt, .lrc, or .md file onto the formatter, or paste directly.
  3. Pick your target. Suno mode keeps full song structure; Udio mode enforces the tight character budget.
  4. Clean, review, copy. Check the summary of what was removed, copy the result, and paste it into Suno or Udio.
  5. Iterate on the music, not the formatting. Once lyrics are clean, every regeneration varies the music β€” not the words.

Suno vs Udio formatting at a glance

Both platforms want chord-free lyrics with square-bracket section tags, but their constraints differ:

LyricPrep's mode selector applies the right limits and defaults for whichever platform you're targeting. See the Udio guide for fitting a song into 350 characters.

Frequently asked

Is LyricPrep free? Yes β€” no account, no watermark, no limits on cleaning.

Does it work offline? After the first load, yes (service-worker free static site).

Will it delete my words? No. It only removes chord lines, chord tokens, and repeat markers you choose. Performance hints (e.g. β€œ- soft vocal”) can be kept.

What's the difference between Suno mode and Udio mode? Mainly the character budget and defaults. Suno mode targets up to 3,000 characters with full song structure; Udio mode enforces a ~350-character limit and helps you prioritize which sections survive the cut.

Which file types can I drop in? .txt, .lrc, and .md files work via drag-and-drop. Anything else, just copy-paste the text.

Should I remove the song title from the lyrics? Yes β€” from the lyrics box. A title pasted as the first line often gets sung. Put the title in the platform's title field instead.

Can I use LyricPrep for cover songs? For formatting, yes β€” but make sure you have the rights to use the lyrics. Responsibility for copyright stays with you; see the copyright notice.
